Academic awarded prestigious Fellowship
Sunday, 06.26.2011, 08:49am (GMT)

(Media-Newswire.com) - A University of Bristol academic has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering to study how buildings and road bridges made of advanced composite materials ( such as glass and carbon fibre reinforced polymers ) behave under different types of loading.

The Fellowship, awarded to Dr Wendel Sebastian, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, will run from 2011 to 2012.
During the Fellowship Dr Sebastian will develop an intelligent and time-efficient computational strategy to predict the complex responses of these buildings and bridges to both short-term and long-term loads.

This will involve collaboration with the Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science ( ACCIS ) research group in the University’s Aerospace Engineering department and also with an internationally leading research group in Switzerland focused on civil engineering applications of advanced composites.

Only five Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships were awarded nationally this year.  The other four awards are for research in the fields of nuclear engineering, bioengineering, statistics, and the material Graphene, which was the focus of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Further information:
The Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships provide an opportunity for mid-career academics based in UK universities to be relieved of their administrative and teaching responsibilities, for between one academic term and a year, in order to concentrate on full time research in any engineering discipline.

The award provides a grant to cover the cost of a replacement member of staff for the period of the Fellowship to carry out the teaching and administrative responsibilities of the researcher. A support fund of up to £2,500 is also available as part of the Fellowship.

The Royal Academy of Engineering
Founded in 1976, The Royal Academy of Engineering promotes the engineering and technological welfare of the country. Our fellowship - comprising the UK’s most eminent engineers - provides the leadership and expertise for our activities, which focus on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life. As a national academy, we provide independent and impartial advice to Government; work to secure the next generation of engineers; and provide a voice for Britain’s engineering community.

Chongqing is situated at the upper reaches of the Yangtze and at the joint of central China and West China. It is rich in biological resources, mineral resources, water resources and the unique Three Gorges tourist resources. The world famous construction of the Three Gorges dam and developable emigration of the reservoir area and the investment demand and consumption need of the 30 million people who are marching to a well-off living standard will provide a vast market potential for the future development of Chongqing.
