Extra energy from coal fields possible
Friday, 01.11.2008, 03:41pm
A team of researchers believe they may have found a way of extracting more energy from the region's coal fields. The team of geologists and biologists from Newcastle University and
Calgary University in Canada have been studying the little-understood
process by which naturally-occurring bacteria deep below the ground
converts oil and coal to natural gas over many millions of years.

New Energy Uses for Asphalt
Monday, 01.07.2008, 05:03pm
If you've ever blistered your bare feet on a hot road you know that
asphalt absorbs the sun's energy. A Dutch company is now siphoning heat
from roads and parking lots to heat homes and offices. As climate change rises on the international agenda, the system built
by the civil engineering firm, Ooms Avenhorn Holding BV, doesn't look
as wacky as it might have 10 years ago when first conceived.

The Hanging Bridge of Vizcaya
Monday, 01.07.2008, 04:27pm
The Hanging Bridge of Vizcaya, crossing over the mouth of the Nervión River west of the capital of Vizcaya province, Bilbao,
is a remarkable feat of engineering which was the first bridge in the
world to carry both people and traffic on a suspended gondola, and is
the only one of its type still in use today. Indeed, it was used as a
model for many similar bridges elsewhere in Europe, as well as Africa
and the Americas. Only a few of those bridges survive today.

approaches to designing a new 47,000-foot residence in Rancho Santa Fe,
the most expensive ever built in the area, and converting a Naval
Training Center Building into a usable shared space for a charter
elementary school and a high school, High Tech High.
