I'm currently doing a 4th year project thesis. I'm currently in the research phase but soon will be starting on the implementation and design of a tower crane.

I will be picking an already designed crane sections and designing them myself. I will be designing the foundation (Pad) myself through the moments.

Some initial problems ive been having are picking the right truss (ie Howe, Pratt etc...) and why i would pick one. Also what size members should i be using? I'm planning on using circular hollow sections as the majority of members with welded connections throughout and bolted at section ends.
Should the sections in the mast be designed similar to that of a roof truss or individually?

Any advice would be helpful and also other areas of interest/problems i havent foreseen. i have done the research phase of my project and am currently starting my implementation phase where i will also be using LUSAS to help me but firstly i must design a section by hand to make sure it corresponds to LUSAS.

I know this is not a common field of expertise but any advice would be grateful.

Thanks in advance

I would think that it is quite difficult for a student project. However, choosing the right software program would help a lot.

Good luck

Yes its in my brief that i must use LUSAS (London UNiversity Stress Analysis System). I have a bit further than before.

But one thing that im not sure which type strength steel is used more commonly? S355 or S460. I was planning on S355 but might just go with S355 to be on the extra safe side.

Any info or thoughts would be helpful though and appreciated! If someone might be knowledgeable on this topic maybe if they might help me here please.
