Environment Sustainability’ was recognized as a huge concern by global leaders of 189 countries in the year 2000, and it was made one of the key Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015. As 2010 marks completion of 10 years of progress on the MDGs, a high level UN meet is scheduled in September this year to review the progress of various countries, in which the PM of India would also participate. Environment Sustainability would be a key discussion topic at this summit as well.
Mr.Minar Pimple, Regional Director , Asia and the Pacific - UN Millennium Campaign had to say following words on the occasion of ‘World Environment Day’.
“World leaders of 189 countries recognised the need to work towards environment sustainability 10 years ago and included it as one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG – 7) to be achieved by 2015. It has been encouraging to see how Corporates, NGOs and Government agencies from across the globe have put in efforts to decrease their carbon footprint in the past 10 years. Much more effort needs to be put in to ensure that people have increased access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to ensure better health and basic hygiene. On the occasion of World Environment Day, especially during the 10 year review of the Millennium Declaration, I hope that Rich and Poor country governments will keep Their Promise of achieving MDGs. I appeal to all individuals to make ‘Going-Green’ a personal motto while holding the Government accountable on its commitment to environment sustainability.”
