I have been working in the public works arena for the last 10 years. I have been a utility locator and utilty construction inspector.
My current job has me working with civil engineers, inspectors, contractors and utility locators daily. I am responsible for reviewing construction plans, working with contractors, inspecting wastewater conveyance system man holes for structural integrity and abnormalities and etc...
Here's my question: I am soon to be 32 years old and have been giving some serious thought to becoming a civil engineer. Fortunately, my current employer embraces the idea and is willing to help with scheduling and working around classes.
However, realistically, if I started back to school this upcoming spring 2009 semester, it would probably take me 6-years to finish the degree.
That being the case, I would be a new graduate at the ripe age of 38. My concern is that I will put a lot of time, energy and money into this pursuit and I don't want my age to be a factor for employment.
I have heard that many engineering firms are reluctant to hire older, non-tra***ional grads. While my current employer would gladly hire me as an EIT, that will be strictly dependant upon openings at the time and budgeting.
So, if I should have to job search after graduation, would my age be a factor against me?
Thank you for you opinions and answers!
