View Full Version : CE at my age?

I have been working in the public works arena for the last 10 years. I have been a utility locator and utilty construction inspector.

My current job has me working with civil engineers, inspectors, contractors and utility locators daily. I am responsible for reviewing construction plans, working with contractors, inspecting wastewater conveyance system man holes for structural integrity and abnormalities and etc...

Here's my question: I am soon to be 32 years old and have been giving some serious thought to becoming a civil engineer. Fortunately, my current employer embraces the idea and is willing to help with scheduling and working around classes.

However, realistically, if I started back to school this upcoming spring 2009 semester, it would probably take me 6-years to finish the degree.

That being the case, I would be a new graduate at the ripe age of 38. My concern is that I will put a lot of time, energy and money into this pursuit and I don't want my age to be a factor for employment.

I have heard that many engineering firms are reluctant to hire older, non-tra***ional grads. While my current employer would gladly hire me as an EIT, that will be strictly dependant upon openings at the time and budgeting.

So, if I should have to job search after graduation, would my age be a factor against me?

Thank you for you opinions and answers!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I would think that learning is never too late and you are still young! I do not think that 38 year old is a problem!! For civil engineering, we need experienced people.

Good luck with your study!

I'd say "Go for it!".

I was 28 when I graduated-- 30 years ago-- and a good friend of mine was 38 when he graduated and I think we both found that many employers see having a little of life experience under your belt is an advantage when hiring a green newly graduated engineer.

Well age should create obstruction between the learning, it is all about
the passion to move forward and learn.
