By constructing earthquake safe houses and buildings, 80-90% of the losses can be reuced.
Disaster Risk = Hazard x Vulnerability
If vulnerability is reduced, risk of disaster consequences will also decrease. To be safe from earthquake, we have to construct earthquake resistant structures (http://www.engpedia.com/index.php/Earthquake_Resistant_Buildings_Design). There is no other way. If some technology is devised to predict the earthquake, still only human losses will be saved but the buildings, if not earthquake resistant, will fail, causing economic losses.
Thousands of earthquakes occur each year but most of them are in the seas and oceans and we do not feel them.
Some interesting facts
Energy Evolved from an earthquake having Magnitude on Richter Scale equals to 6
Emits energy equal to 1 Hiroshima Atom Bomb
Energy Evolved from an earthquake having Magnitude on Richter Scale equals to 7
Emits energy equal to 100 x 1 Hiroshima Atom Bomb
Energy Evolved from an earthquake having Magnitude on Richter Scale equals to 8
Emits energy equal to 100 x 100 x 1 Hiroshima Atom Bomb
And So on....

Tip #1.
Falling & Flying Objects:
1. The largest financial loss and bodily injury occurs during an earthquake from flying objects, falling fittings & fixtures and overturned furniture.
2. Fasten objects that are heavy to fixed furnishings.
3. Anchor heavy and tall furniture to the wall or floor to prevent them from turning over.
Tip #2.
Doors & Drawers:
1. During an earthquake cabinet doors and drawers can come open.
2. Place locks and strong latches on your cabinet's door and file cabinets to keep them from opening and spilling their contents on the floor causing damage.
Tip #3.
Gadgets, Equipment & Appliances:
1. The water heater and other heavy appliances (such as refrigerator, dish washer, etc) must be securely fastened to the wall or floor with studs and anchors to prevent them from sliding or toppling over.
2. Make sure that any appliance connected to a gas pipe has pliable tubing.
Tip #4.
Electrical Wiring:
1. Electrical short circuits during an earthquake can cause fires.
2. Make sure electrical circuits in your home are suitably earthed.
Tip #5.
Hazardous & Inflammable Materials:
1. Keep hazardous materials in proper containers and place them in a sturdy and secure cabinet anchored to the wall with a strong latch. Mixing or spilling chemicals can be dangerous.
2. Store inflammable products outside the house – in a separate shed or the garage.
Tip #6.
General:
1. Keep fire extinguishers at home and use it to minimize damage if a fire breaks out during an earthquake.
2. Make sure your home or renters insurance is up to date. Have earthquake cover in your home insurance, particularly if you are residing in a earthquake-prone area.
3. Have a first aid kit readily available in case of injury.

No building could withstand a really powerful earthquake, say above 9 or 10.
However, for the smaller ones, it needs the ability to flex. That's why wooden buildings survive better than concrete ones.
Many "earthquake-proof" buildings have been built on spring-type or floating foundations. Frank Lloyd Wright designed one in Japan (the Imperial Hotel) which survived the 1923 Kanto earthquake.
Also, some have flexible struts in an X pattern to allow the building to move but stay structurally sound. an example of one, the Alcoa Building in San Francisco

There is someone that is coming or passing away in your life around the clock, so you may lose sight of those seen, and forget those remembered. There is gain and loss in your life, so you may catch sight of those unseen, and remember those forgotten. Nevertheless, doesn‘t the unseen exist for sure? Will the remembered remain forever?

Secure your belongings. The largest financial loss you can incur during an earthquake will be from falling objects and overturned furniture. Fasten objects that are fragile, costly or heavy to fixed furnishings. Anchor your heavy and tall furniture to the wall or floor to prevent them from turning over.
Put latches on cabinet doors and file cabinets. During an earthquake doors and drawers can come open. Place strong latches on your cabinet's door and file cabinets to keep them from opening and spilling their contents on the floor causing damage. Fasten your water heater and other appliances. Secure your water heater to wall studs. Anchor your appliances to the wall or floor to prevent them from sliding or falling over. Make sure that any appliance connected to a gas pipe has pliable tubing. Store hazardous materials in a sturdy place. Mixing or spilling chemicals can be dangerous. Make sure that any hazardous products are in their proper containers and stored in a cabinet secured to a wall with a strong latch. Keep fire extinguishers. Place them throughout your home in the event you need them. If a fire starts during an earthquake having a fire extinguisher nearby will help minimize the damage.

Earthquake construction involves a seismic design to enable structures to deal with presumed earthquake exposure as per the expectations. Understanding the possible failure modes of a structure, then providing the structure with appropriate strength, as well as other factors like ductility, stiffness and configuration ensures that failure do not occur. Keeping in mind that earthquake may occur any time prior to construction is as important as quality control and using correct materials. Moreover, contractor must be registered, bonded and insured in the state.

Quite appreciable post on "how to avoid earthquake damages". But precautions should be taken care right from constructing the buildings or houses, There are many ways of constructing building such as to minimize the loss due to disaster like a earthquake! Also if you are driving, carefully and slowly bring your vehicle to a stop at the side of the road quite away from the traffic..
