A trickling filter consists of a fixed bed of rocks, gravel, slag, polyurethane foam, sphagnum peat moss, or plastic media over which sewage or other wastewater flows downward and is contacted with a layer or film of microbial slime covering the bed media. Aerobic conions are maintained either by forced air flowing through the bed or natural convection of air if the filter medium is porous. The process mechanism involves adsorption of organic compounds in the sewage or other wastewater by the layer of microbial slime, diffusion of air into the slime layer to furnish the oxygen required for the biochemical oxidation of the organic compounds to release carbon dioxide gas, water and other oxidized end products. As the slime layer thickens, it becomes more difficult for air to penetrate the layer and an inner anaerobic layer is probably formed. For some plastic-mesh material filters this slime layer will build and eventually slough off the smooth plastic walls into the treated effluent as a sludge that requires subsequent removal and disposal.

The terms trickle filter, trickling biofilter, biofilter, biological filter and biological trickling filter are often used to refer to a trickling filter.

Below is a schematic disgram of a typical complete trickling filter system:

(This posting is an excerpt from an article in the online Citizendium (http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Large-scale_trickle_filters) which I created and I also created the diagram.)

Bio-balls are great at converting nitrites to nitrates, but live rock has anaerobes deep within the rock, which will remove the nitrates, along with the nitrites and ammonia.

The basic difference between the wastewater-activated sludge process and the action involved in a wastewater-trickling filter should be understood. In the case of a trickling filter process, the bacterial film coating the contact material is stationary and likely to become clogged after some time. In the wastewater-activated sludge process, the finer suspended matter of sewage itself contains the bacterial film, which is kept moving because of the constant agitation. The so called sludge floc contains active, free-loving organisms which are being continuously swept through the sewage and which, in their search for food and work, oxidize the organic matter present in the sewage in a much more efficient way.

Welcome to my project management software directory. I am hoping to provide a comprehensive directory of project management software for the Microsoft Windows platforms. By project management, I mean to include tools that assist in planning, scheduling, tracking and analyzing a project. I'm not trying to list every piece of software that is project management related (timesheet management, document management, project collaboration, etc.).

I am new in this, but me and my team has been doing this about two months ago in the town where I live. I am proud of it although this is my first experience in water treatment.

a clear result of my work and the team has been helpful in overcoming the lack of sanitation, poor water and water resources in one place in my city

Wow. I didn't realize you were the creator of Citizendium! I ran in to that so many times while I was obtaining my online degree (http://www.scrantonuniversityonline.com). Seems like a few advances have been made since the posting of this diagram, but for a general overview this is great.

Hi, A Trickling Filter is a fixed bed, biological filter that operates under aerobic conditions. Pre-settled wastewater is ‘trickled’ or sprayed over the filter. As the water migrates through the pores of the filter, organics are degraded by the biomass covering the filter material.

Very interesting system, I'd like to know who have done it before or not. I do have many clients who are interesting in this kind of filter system.

Can ammonia used as a cooling reagent ???

Bio-balls are amazing at converting nitrites to nitrates, but reside rock has anaerobes deep within of the rock, that will get rid of the nitrates, along using the nitrites and ammonia.
